The Queensland Police Service will appeal the sentences given to six Townsville men who pleaded guilty to torturing a litter of kittens in May.

Commissioner of Police Bob Atkinson said the decision to appeal the sentences with respect to all six defendants was made on the grounds that the sentences imposed were, in his view, inadequate.

A range of issues were considered in the decision to appeal the sentences, including the nature of the sentences imposed, the circumstances of the offences, the lack of comparative cases with which to form a view of the adequacy of the relevant sentences, and the public interest.

The appeal has been lodged in Townsville today.
